Srila Prabhupada, the leader of the Hare Krishna movement said in the 1970's that in the future there will be a great shortage of jobs, and he recommended to get some land and grow food and other necessities like cotton and castor seeds. You can take care of some cows and get milk to drink and make butter and cheese. He taught his students to follow a vegetarian (not vegan) diet. No meat fish or eggs. Because killing animals is very bad karma.
