Krishna Consciousness in Russia

In 1971, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada visited the USSR and planted the seed of Krishna consciousness. Krishna consciousness is the essence of Hinduism, also known as Sanatan Dharma. In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says that He is the Supreme goal of the Vedas, Vedanta, and Vedic culture. Prabhupada was on a closely supervised visit in those days, but he managed to preach to a young man named Ivan, and initiated him giving him the name Ananta Shanti Das. After Prabhupada's visit, Ananta Shanti preached all over the USSR. Many developments took place over the years regarding the history of spreading Krishna consciousness in Russia with much service and sacrifice by many devotees of Krishna, and today in Russia there are people who subscribe to the philosophy of Krishna consciousness numbering in the millions. If you are interested in learning this philosophy, you can read Srila Prabhupada's books free online at the Bhaktivedanta Vedabase. Also, the institution that Prabhupada established is perhaps the largest in the world today that propagates the complete culture of Sanatan Dharma. It is called the International Society for Krishna Consciousness or ISKCON. Today ISKCON has around 1000 temples and cultural centers in many countries around the world. You can visit these centers to learn about and practice Krishna consciousness. You can also practice Krishna consciousness in your own home or anywhere you live. In this modern age, the central focus among Krishna conscious activities is the chanting of the Holy Names of The Supreme Personality of Godhead, via the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare šŸ™šŸ¼

The Hare Krishna Lifestyle

Accepting the Hare Krishna lifestyle means having a sane, clean, enlightened, happy life and a very bright future in the next life. It is based on the teachings of the Vedic scriptures and spiritual masters. One worships, glorifies, and serves Lord Sri Krishna while avoiding drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, nonvegetarian food, and gambling. According to the Vedas, suffering in this life and the next life is due to ignorance. People do not know that many of their activities are producing adverse reactions according to the laws of nature or karma. Any person who accepts that he or she is an eternal servant of The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, and tries their best to follow the path given by the Lord in the Vedas and taught by the spiritual masters in disciplic succession is liberated from the cycle of birth and death in the material world. It may appear that such a person is of defective character but he/she will quickly advance and attain Krishna very soon. We have been in this material world for an inconceivably long time so even a few more births is relatively soon.

Japa

Japa is chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare / hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare. In ISKCON Srila Prabhupada set the standard that devotees should chant at least 16 rounds of japa per day. Without chanting on the Krishna bead one starts on the first bead next to the Krishna bead chanting the mantra once per bead to the other end then start at the end bead going back in the other direction etc. There are 108 beads on a strand of japa beads, so one chants the full mantra 108 x 16 times a day. One should also chant the Pancha-tattva Maha Mantra once at the beginning of each round: sri-krishna-chaitanya prabhu-nityananda sri-advaita gadadhara srivasadi-gaura-bhakta-vrinda.

The Three Modes of Material Nature

As per Vedic philosophy, as jivas or spirit souls we are always under the influence of God's energy. The liberated souls are under the influence and protection of the Divine Nature and the prominent symptom is that they love the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This love of Godhead avails happiness trillions of times greater than the love of this material world. The fallen souls are under the influence of the material energy or maya. This is also called the illusory energy. By eternal constitution we are loving servants of God, not independent enjoyers. The illusory energy facilitates the illusion of being an independent enjoyer, but this illusory "enjoyment" is temporary and not fully satisfying to the soul. The illusory energy is actually functioning as three energies called the three modes of material nature. The three modes are 1) goodness 2) passion and 3) ignorance or darkness. In the mode of goodness one can see things as they are. In the mode of passion one is not sure what is right or wrong. In the mode of ignorance one considers irreligion to be religion and religion to be irreligion. A complete course on this subject matter is found in Bhagavad-gita Chapters 14 and 18. Please click here for the complete Bhagavad-gita As It Is, translation and explanations (purports) by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acharya of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between a Krishnaite and a Vaishnava? A: A Krishnaite is a Vaishnava whose ultimate goal is Krishna, the original Vishnu. ---- Q: Do you believe in reincarnation? A: Yes, reincarnation or transmigration of the soul is discussed extensively in the Vedas. One principal citation is from Bhagavad-gita 2.13: "As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A self-realized soul is not bewildered by such a change." This process takes place throughout different species of life and different planets (heavenly, earthly, and hellish) perpetually until one is transferred to one of the planets of the transcendental eternal nature where is no death. ---- Q: How can one be transferred to the transcendental nature? A: By the process of Krishna consciousness, aka Bhakti-yoga or devotional service to Krishna. One gradually advances from beginner to the stage of perfection in Krishna consciousness where one is able to see Lord Krishna always and feel unlimited happiness; and to go to His Supreme Abode/planet in the next life. A very special benefit of the process of Bhakti-yoga is that whatever progress we make in this life is never lost, and just by beginning the process one is guaranteed at least a human body in the next life. "In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear." -Bhagavad-gita 2.40

Sri Narada Muni, the Eternal Space Traveler

  ÅšrÄ«la Bhaktivinoda į¹¬hākura has sung:

nārada-munibājāya vÄ«į¹‡Ä,
‘rādhikā-ramaį¹‡a’-nāme
nāma amaniudita haya,
bhakata-gīta-sāme
paƱca-vadananārade dhari’,
premera saghana rola
kamalāsana, nāciyā bale,
’bola bola hari bola’
sahasrānana, parama-sukhe,
’hari hari’ bali’ gāya
nāma-prabhāvemātila viśva,
nāma-rasa sabe pāya
śrÄ«-kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a-nāma, rasane sphuri’,
purā’la Ämāra ÄÅ›a
śrÄ«-rÅ«pa-pade, yācaye ihā,
bhakativinoda dāsa
The purport of this song is that Nārada Muni, the great soul, plays a stringed instrument called a vÄ«į¹‡Ä, vibrating the sound rādhikā-ramaį¹‡a, which is another name for Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a. As soon as he strokes the strings, all the devotees begin responding, making a very beautiful vibration. Accompanied by the stringed instrument, the singing seems like a shower of nectar, and all the devotees dance in ecstasy to the fullest extent of their satisfaction. While dancing, they appear madly intoxicated with ecstasy, as if drinking the beverage called mādhurÄ«-pÅ«ra. Some of them cry, some of them dance, and some of them, although unable to dance publicly, dance within their hearts. Lord Śiva embraces Nārada Muni and begins talking in an ecstatic voice, and seeing Lord Śiva dancing with Nārada, Lord Brahmā also joins, saying, “All of you kindly chant ‘Hari bolHari bol!’ ” The King of heaven, Indra, also gradually joins with great satisfaction and begins dancing and chanting “Hari bolHari bol!” In this way, by the influence of the transcendental vibration of the holy name of God, the whole universe becomes ecstatic. Bhaktivinoda į¹¬hākura says, “When the universe becomes ecstatic, my desire is satisfied. I therefore pray unto the lotus feet of RÅ«pa GosvāmÄ« that this chanting of harer nāma [Adi 17.21] may go on nicely like this.”
Lord Brahmā is the guru of Nārada Muni, who is the guru of Vyāsadeva, and Vyāsadeva is the guru of Madhvācārya. Thus the GauįøÄ«ya-Mādhva-sampradāya is in the disciplic succession from Nārada Muni. The members of this disciplic succession—in other words, the members of the Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness movement—should follow in the footsteps of Nārada Muni by chanting the transcendental vibration Hare Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡aHare Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡aKį¹›į¹£į¹‡a Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a, Hare Hare/ Hare RāmaHare RāmaRāma Rāma, Hare Hare. They should go everywhere to deliver the fallen souls by vibrating the Hare Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a mantra and the instructions of Bhagavad-gÄ«tā, ÅšrÄ«mad-Bhāgavatam and Caitanya-caritāmį¹›ta. That will please the Supreme Personality of Godhead.  (From Srila Prabhupada's Purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 6.5.22)

The Qualities of a Vaishnava

Anyone who has developed unalloyed, unflinching devotional service unto the Lord develops his original good qualities as spirit soul. The spirit soul, as part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, has all the good qualities of the Lord. When the spirit soul is contaminated by the material modes of nature, one is considered good or bad with reference to the material qualities. But when one is transcendental to all material qualities, all the good qualities come out. These qualities of a devotee, twenty-six in number, are listed as follows: (1) kind to everyone, (2) does not quarrel with anyone, (3) fixed in the Absolute Truth, (4) equal to everyone, (5) faultless, (6) charitable, (7) mild, (8) clean, (9) simple, (10) benevolent, (11) peaceful, (12) completely attached to Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a, (13) has no material hankering, (14) meek, (15) steady, (16) self-controlled, (17) does not eat more than required, (18) sane, (19) respectful, (20) humble, (21) grave, (22) compassionate, (23) friendly, (24) poetic, (25) expert, (26) silent. The Lord is satisfied by development of the transcendental qualities of the living entity and not by artificial performance of sacrifices and mystic yoga. In other words, unless one is fully qualified to become a pure devotee of the Lord, one cannot expect to be liberated from material entanglement.  (-from Srila Prabhupada's commentary on Srimad Bhagavatam 4.20.16)

1) When, oh when will that day be mine? When my offenses ceasing, taste for the name increasing, when in
my heart will your mercy shine, when, oh when will that day be mine?

2) Lower than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree. When will my mind attain this quality? Respectful to
all, not expecting their honour, then shall I taste the name’s nectar sublime. When, oh when will that day be mine?

3) Great wealth or followers, feminine beauty, I won’t care for them or the comforts of my body. Birth after
birth give me, Oh Lord Caitanya, causeless devotion to Your feet divine, when, oh when will that day be mine?

4) When will I utter Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, with words choked up and shivering body? When will I be trembling
all over, lose bodily color, tears pouring from my eyes, when, oh when will that day be mine?

5) When in Navadvipa along the Ganges bank, shouting ‘Gaura-Nityananda’ as a surrendered soul,
dancing, chanting, running everywhere, when will I become half mad of mind? When, oh when will that day
be mine?

6) When will Lord Nityananda show mercy upon me, when will I reject the world of maya? Bestow unto me
the shade of Your lotus feet, let the right to preach the name be mine. When, oh when will that day be mine?

7) I will beg, borrow, or steal the nectar of the name. By the name’s effect I will feel paralyzed. Oh! Enjoyer of
the nectar of the name, When will I touch your lotus feet till the end of time? When, oh when will that day
be mine?

8) When kindness to all beings will be appearing, with free heart forget myself comforting, Bhaktivinoda in
all humility prays, "Now I will set out to preach Your order sublime." When, oh when will that day be mine?

“Let me take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ŚrÄ« Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a, who has descended in the form of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu to teach us real knowledge, His devotional service and detachment from whatever does not foster Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness. Bhagavad Gita 5.11 (1972), Translation and Purport by Srila Prabhupada

The yogÄ«s, abandoning attachment, act with body, mind, intelligence, and even with the senses, only for the purpose of purification.

By acting in Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness for the satisfaction of the senses of Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a, any action, whether of the body, mind, intelligence or even of the senses, is purified of material contamination. There are no material reactions resulting from the activities of a Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a conscious person. Therefore, purified activities, which are generally called sadācāra, can be easily performed by acting in Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness. ŚrÄ« RÅ«pa GosvāmÄ« in his Bhakti-rasāmį¹›ta-sindhu describes this as follows:

Ä«hā yasya harer dāsye karmaį¹‡Ä manasā girā

nikhilāsv apy avasthāsu jÄ«vanmuktaįø„ sa ucyate

A person acting in Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness (or, in other words, in the service of Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a) with his body, mind, intelligence and words is a liberated person even within the material world, although he may be engaged in many so-called material activities. He has no false ego, nor does he believe that he is this material body, nor that he possesses the body. He knows that he is not this body and that this body does not belong to him. He himself belongs to Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a, and the body too belongs to Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a. When he applies everything produced of the body, mind, intelligence, words, life, wealth, etc.-whatever he may have within his possession-to Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a's service, he is at once dovetailed with Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a. He is one with Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a and is devoid of the false ego that leads one to believe that he is the body, etc. This is the perfect stage of Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness.

Yoga and Meditation: Fixate Your Mind on Krishna

Yoga also means to connect. Connect to who or what? Connect to Krishna. We are fixating our mind on mundane things like money, material love, sensuality, etc. but these are not making us happy. In fact in the modern age our minds are very much filled with these things but depression and anxiety are bigger problems than ever. Krishna is the Eternal Reality Who is the unlimited source of REAL happiness. The culture of Krishna consciousness gives us the opportunity to always think of Krishna and become happy forever.

God is Maintaining Everyone

According to the Vedas there are an unlimited number of eternal individual souls both in this material world (prison) and the transcendent world (Kingdom of God). Beyond the innumerable souls there is one Supreme Soul and that is Krishna. That one Supreme Soul is alone maintaining all the unlimited spirit souls (jivas) supplying all their necessities of life.

Feeling Gratitude to God

O my Lord! Transcendental poets and experts in spiritual science could not fully express their indebtedness to You, even if they were endowed with the prolonged lifetime of Brahmā, for You appear in two features — externally as the ācārya and internally as the Supersoul — to deliver the embodied living being by directing him how to come to You.    -Srimad Bhagavatam 11.29.6

Vegetarian Diet

I am a vegetarian since 1978. I eat dairy products from cows (no eggs). Reasons for not eating meat could make a long article or even a long book. in fact there are many books on this subject. My idea for this blog, at least for now, is to avoid long winded posts that may be tedious for the reader. I'll just make one point here. Eating the flesh of a dead animal does not seem desirable to me. That's my opinion. Here's a link for the online version of The Higher Taste- a book on vegetarianism. It's small but filled with useful information including some nice recipes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              https://harekrishna.com/col/books/VEG/ht/

Who is Krishna?

Krishna is the Supreme Reality. Everything that exists is an expansion of His energy. In this regard, our Gaudiya Vaishnava spiritual masters cite a scripture called the Brahma-samhita: "Krishna, who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the prime cause of all causes."

Early Days of ISKCON

https://youtu.be/UZxg6mAdZLU?si=R41enTd8Npzs27g7

Bhakti-rasāmį¹›ta-sindhu 1.4.15-16

In the beginning there must be faith. Then one becomes interested in associating with pure devotees. Thereafter one is initiated by the spiritual master and executes the regulative principles under his orders. Thus one is freed from all unwanted habits and becomes firmly fixed in devotional service. Thereafter, one develops taste and attachment. This is the way of sādhana-bhakti, the execution of devotional service according to the regulative principles. Gradually emotions intensify, and finally there is an awakening of love. This is the gradual development of love of Godhead for the devotee interested in Kį¹›į¹£į¹‡a consciousness.

The Jewel of Faith

Faith means to trust in something that we can't perceive with our material senses. To subscribe to the tenets of scripture and the teachings of saints of which there is no empirical proof for or against. Abiding by such values, however, the faithful perceive God acting in their lives in many ways. Faith is the beginning of the path of devotion.

Pastimes of Sri Narasimha

Four Great Sages:

Once upon a time, the great sages, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanatkumara visited Vaikuntha. There are seven gates in Vaikuntha loka and when the sages tried to enter the seventh gate, the door keepers, Jaya and Vijaya stopped them by blocking the way with their staff, and thereby offended the sages. The sages cursed them to take birth in the material world. The door-keepers repented for their mistake.

jaya vijaya

Jaya and Vijaya cursed:

At that time, Supreme Lord Vishnu, appeared there and informed that the punishment given by the sages was actually ordained by Himself. The door-keepers, Jaya and Vijaya would take birth in a demoniac family and they would be firmly united with Him in thought through mental concentration intensified by anger. He also confirmed that they would return to Vaikuntha soon. Thus Jaya and Vijaya took birth in this material world as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, the sons of sage Kashyapa and Diti.

boar incarnation

Lord Varaha, the boar incarnation:

Hiranyaksha was so powerful that he brought all three worlds under his control. He challenged Varuna to fight with him, but Varuna deva directed him to Lord Varaha, the boar incarnation of the Supreme Lord Vishnu. Hiranyaksha was killed in the combat with Lord Varaha. Hiranyakashipu wanted to avenge the death of his brother. To become immortal, he undertook severe penances at Mandarachala to please Lord Brahma.

Hiranyakashipu, the King of Demons:

When Lord Brahma appeared in front of him, he asked for immortality. But even Brahma was not immortal. How could he grant immortality to someone? So Brahma agreed to give him any benediction other than immortality. So the demon asked Brahma that he should not be killed by a human being or an animal or demigod or any other entity, living or non-living. He also prayed that he should not be killed at any place, neither in the daytime nor night, by any kind of weapons. He further requested to award him supremacy over the entire universe and perfection in mystic powers. After receiving the benedictions from Lord Brahma, Hiranyakashipu terrorized the entire universe. He conquered the ten directions and brought every one under his control.

narada muni stops indra from kidnapping kayadhu

Narada saves Kayadhu:

When Hiranyakashipu went to Mandarachala to execute severe austerities, his wife, Kayadhu, was pregnant. The demigods headed by Indra attacked the demons and arrested Kayadhu. They wanted to kill the child as soon as it took birth. Narada Maharishi stopped Indra and revealed that the child would be a great devotee of Lord Hari. He took Kayadhu to his hermitage and gave her instructions on spiritual knowledge. The child in the womb of Kayadhu attentively listened to the instructions of Narada Maharishi and became a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.

prahlada maharaja preaches to school mates

Prahlada instructs his class mates:

The child was named Prahlada. Hiranyakashipu entrusted his son Prahlada, to Chanda and Amarka, the two sons of Shukracharya, for education. They tried to teach him politics, economics and other material activities; but Prahlada did not care for such instructions. He was always meditating on the Supreme Lord. When Hiranyakashipu came to know about this, he was extremely angry and chastised the teachers for teaching the child about Vishnu-bhakti. But when it was proved that they were innocent, he decided to kill the child.

hiranyakashipu threatens prahlada

Hiranyakashipu tortures his son:

The order carriers of the demoniac king tried to kill the child by striking him with deadly weapons, putting him under the feet of elephants, subjecting him to hellish conditions, throwing him from the peak of a mountain, etc., but they could not kill him. Hiranyakashipu became more and more agitated. He challenged Prahlada, “Where is your God?” and Prahlada replied that God resided everywhere. Pointing to one of the pillars in the palace Hiranyakashipu asked: “Is your God within this pillar?” and the child answered “Yes. He is.” At once he forcefully struck the pillar and shattered it into pieces. From inside the pillar, the Supreme Lord Hari, appeared as Narasimha (the half-man half-lion incarnation).

narasimha killing hiranyakashipu prahlada garlanding the lord

Narasimha deva, the protector of devotees:

He was neither in the form of a human nor an animal. He used His nails as weapons and killed the demon during the twilight period (neither day nor night) sitting on the threshold of the palace (neither inside nor outside) by keeping him on His own lap. Thus the Supreme Lord killed the demon and protected His devotee without violating any of the benedictions awarded by Lord Brahma.
